Wynberg – Experience overflows

We started the Kerala Tourism journey to Wynberg from Edakkal via Meenangadi and Kakkavayal through the lush green path ways of the land that witnessed the suppression and atrocities of many invasions. But the memories of the cave carving were the things that haunted me all the way. Now at Thrikkaipatta, a real rustic hamlet, we were greeted by a totally different experience of holidaying. The tribal youths who were returning after the day’s toil, welcomed us on the village road. Another 100 meters off the road was Wynberg Resort, an amazing hospitality center. The resort is run by Mr.K.R. Vancheeswaran, the wild lifer cum entrepreneur, who is also the secretary of WTO.

Situated amongst coffee, pepper, rubber, acrea and vanilla plantations, Wynberg is rightly nestled on a hillock. We occupied one of the deluxe cottages of Wynberg with the balcony overlooking plain paddy fields and thickly forested hills safeguarding beyond that. After a relaxing shower we went to the restaurant for supper, where Mr. Vancheewaran was briefing about the next day’s plantation visit to two lady guests from the UK. We were also invited to join for the morning walk. Vanchy was eloquently detailing about the traditions, culture, customs, geography, history, ecology myths and legends of the place. While keenly listening to him, we all had the food served lovingly.

Chrisiping of Minivets, orioles, fly catchers, drongo, and rodins is the sweetest morning alarm that wakes you up to the ecological wonders of the resort. The Kerala resort itself has plenty of bird life inside it . Around 39 species of birds are found in and around the cottages. At 7 am, we all assembled at the reception for the much awaited plantation walk.

Through the paddy plantation to arecunut and then to pepper plantation, the journey was supported by Vanchy’s lectures on the processing of betel nuts to making Pan Parag, the flowering of coffee plants to the making of delicious capuchino and also about the kinds of peppers available in the market, etc… He was fluently descriptive on the origin, cultivation, nuturing, harvesting and processing of tapioca, rubber, vanilla and cardamom in Kerala. The huge termitary of mud then we found in the field was a natural wonder of the engineering skills of the small insects and was really exciting to watch. Again back to the plantation secrets and farming lessons from the passionate planter.

Finally, we came to Vanchy’s residence where an array of rare plants and trees are nurtured. The foreign guests along with us whispered ‘this is not a mere visit but a revelation’, So informative and innovative was that experience of farm walk with the nature lover who advocates sustainable tourism.

The time left was only enough to see the three eco terrestrial cottages, one eco tree top, four deluxe cottages, two villas, one luxury tent and one luxury tree top in the resort. The safari drives to explore the silence of jungle and various treks for wild life enthusiasts, the tribal visit with minimum intrusion into life of the sons of the sil, the soft and hard treks to the various mountain done with qualified guides and birding photography along with the nationally acclaimed photographers are some of the unoque experience we missed here as we had to leave by 9 am. The memories of the stay in Wynberg are not just sweet alone but they are stuffed with wisdom uncovered from the nature. Yes, after a long time, here I became a student, an obedient school boy gaining natural experience aplenty.
