The Windermere Estate, enveloped by cardamom plantations, is located on top of the Observation Hill, a fabulous spot with a full view of the surrounding mountains. This Kerala Resort is a small boutique hotel in Munnar, Idukki district, Kerala, a rustic-chic hideaway overlooking acres of tea plantations against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring Western Ghats.

There are 18 individually-styled rooms at The Windermere Estate, divided into 3 categories. The 8 Garden rooms have a plantation house style and pretty lawns out front, with a natural colour scheme of terracottas and creams and exposed stonework walls in the rooms, which open out onto a private veranda looking out to the gardens and the Chithirapuram valley. The 8 Cottage rooms, named after the produce grown on the estate, among them Cardamom, Coffee & Vanilla, have plenty of space at 600 sq ft, each with spacious bathrooms and king-size beds and, naturally, wonderful views. The 2 Planter’s Villas rooms are situated among the oaks, with floor-to-ceiling windows looking out to the tea-covered hills of the Western Ghats. At 1,100 sq ft, these are the largest of the rooms, each with a sitting-dining room, private balcony and a bathroom opening onto a pretty courtyard. All of the en-suite bathrooms have showers and hand-made organic butter soap & bath products, towels & bathrobes are provided.

For breakfast, enjoy a choice of Continental & South Indian dishes including dosa, idili, puri and eggs, bacon, sausage, fruit, toast and juices, all served in the Alpine-style Barn. For lunch choose from a traditional Keralan lunch or sandwiches, with dishes such as vegetarian curries, rice and a non-vegetarian dish followed by an Indian sweet. For dinner enjoy a table d’hote menu of Kerala cuisine such as cream of carrot soup, appam, aloo-palak, fish moiley and butter rice & coconut soufflé, while snacks and afternoon tea are served in the Kerala-style Hut.
