Unique exhibition on photographs of Pachyderms
An exceptional art gallery at Eenchackal, Thiruvananthapuram showcases a grand collection of rare and fascinating photographs of Pachyderms. Baby elephants, wild elephants and caparisoned elephants- all caught in various situations- some funny, some violent, caught on camera by an ace photographer, Mr.B Chandrakumar. Sot in an effort spanning 12 years, this photo exhibition can be considered the world’s first permanent and exclusive photo exhibition on elephants by an individual. It reveals the science and psychology of elephants. It is poetry on elephants written by the ‘lens’ and is extremely informative for researchers and students interested in pachyderm.
There are two major challenges the first is danger and the second is the colour scheme. An elephant is black. In photography, black represents a void. So the most challenging part is to make something out of nothing,” Says Mr. Chandrakumar. He often faced danger while capturing some of the wild elephants on camera. He has even photographed an angry tusker piercing a coconut tree. It took only a few seconds for the tusker to pull out its tusk and Mr. Chandrakumar snapped the picture only because he was prepared for it. “It’s all about understanding the psychology of the elephant,” he said. Mr.Chandrakumar hopes to develop this exclusive photo gallery to the status of an interesting destination for the Kerala tourists.
