As a malayali married to a UP-wallah, it is my bounden duty on a regular basis to accompany North indian friends and relatives down to Kerala so they can enjoy the verdant beauty of my state. Most people come for the beaches and sleepy backwater cruises but, when a cousin decided to come with his two teenaged daughters, we decided—after the obligatory jaunts to Varkala, Kovalam and Kanyakumari—that the girls might like something more adventurous. With a few days to spare, we hired a jeep and drove through idukki district’s lush green hills and tea plantations to the wildlife reserve of Thekkady in search of wild elephants and those all-too-elusive tigers. Kovalam, which literally means the ‘grove of coconut tree’ is known as the ‘Paradise of the South India’ . It has become one of the renowned beaches on the International tourism map, and over the decades developed into the favourite beach haunt of tourist from all over the world, especially Europe. The golden sands and gentle waves along the pristine beach stretches fringing with swaying coconut groves are an irresistible combo. Sree Narayana Guru Samadhi

Samadhi of Sree Narayana Guru at Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala which is about 51 kms away from Thiruvananthapuram by road and also connected by rail. With thousands of pilgrims coming to pay homage to the Samadhi of the great social reformer of Kerala, this place has to be visited. There is also an ancient temple of lord Janardhana or Vishnu said to be atleast 2000 years old. According to an inscription found here, it is believed that the temple was built somewhere during the early 13th century. (more…)

Varkala Kerala

Varkala in Kerala, is the second most popular seaside area after Kovalam.  A temple of Lord Janardhana (Vishnu) built here is said to be almost 2000 years old.  It is a much sought after destination by local and foreign devotees and tourists. Varkala lies 50 km north of Thiruvananthapuram. The ancient temple is believed to date back to early 13th century. An inscription which was found here mentions the date of the reconstruction, and that a bell was presented by a Dutch sailor in the 17th century. This bell still serves as the temple’s main bell.
