Elephant Camps in Kerala

Kerala has 7 elephant camps run by the Forest Department of Kerala.

Konni Elephant Camp (Elephant Kraal)
Konni Elephant training centre lies in Pathanamthitta District which is about 10 kms from the Pathanamthitta town.

Kodanad Elephant Camp
Kodanad is small hamlet that is adorned with lush green paddy fields and dense green forests. It lies in the banks of Periyar and is one of the most beautiful and attractive places in Kerala. It is the head quarters of Malayattoor forest division.

The place lies 12 km from Perumbavoor and 45 km from Kochi.

Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary
Muthanga Wildlife Sanctuary is filled with thick forest and has large number of wild elephants. It is connected to Mudumalai and Karnataka forests. The place is 16 kms from Sulthan Bathery. There is facility for Elephant ride and has an area of 345 square kilometers. According to the last census Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary has the highest density of Asiatic elephant population.

Nilambur
Nilambur is a picturesque location that is lies in the bank of Chaliyar River. The place can be reached by travelling 70 Km from Kozhikode. There is an elephant camp at Nedungayam and people can see and touch this beautiful animal here.

Tholpetti
Tholpetti in Wayanad district shares border with Karnataka. Here there are dense forests and they are healthy locales for elephants. Tholpetti and Muthanga in Western Ghats are renowned for its bio diversity. Silence of nature and beauty of the wild can be enjoyed by going for elephant rides and trekking.

Aryamkavu
Aryamkavu lies 73 km from Kollam. It is famous for its impressive beauty and the temple of Ayyappa inside the forest. The place can be reached by travelling in Kollam-shenkottai route which is a pilgrim centre during the Mandalakalam.

Thekkady (Periyar Tiger Reserve)
Thekkady journey is a rejuvenating experience with lots of nature, thick forests and wide plantations. Prime attraction of this tourist destination is the lake formed by the Mullapperiyar dam across the Periyar River. If you take a boat ride in this artificial river you would come across wild life. There are facilities like Elephant rides and trekking inside the forests available for tourists. To see elephant herds Thekkady is the safest spot. Lots of elephants can be seen around the lake. People visit Thekkady for its intrinsic beauty. People come here for elephant safari also.

Thekkady can be reached by travelling 5 km from the border town of Kumily. It lies in the area of 777 sq. km.

Kumbalangi Model Tourism Village

Kumbalangi

In its unending journey of updating and enhancing itself with the latest trends, Kumbalangi Model Tourism Village joined the league of Responsible Tourism Movement. As part of the effort the first seminar on Responsible Tourism was held at the Panchayat hall on October 31, 2012. It was conducted by the Kerala Institute of Tourism and Travel Studies (KITTS), Village Panchayat and Kumbalangi Model Tourism Development Society (KMTDS).
