Kurinjimala Sanctuary
The Kurinjimala Sanctuary is about 32 sq. km. in area and is located in Devikulam, which is in Idukki district. The sanctuary is named after a very famous blue flower in Kerala, Neelakurinji. This flower is found abundantly in Idukki district and Munnar region. Kurinjimala literally means mountain where Kurinji flowers are found. The forest department organizes a Neelakurinji fest every year in the month of October.
The Sanctuary is the natural habitat of the endangered plant Neelakurinji. It was declared as a sanctuary in 2006. The objective is to retain the unique biodiversity of this area.
