Local Language and Religion of Lakshadweep

Local Language – For the major part of Lakshadweep, the language spoken is Malayalam. Minicoy is however an exception where the spoken language is Mahal which is written in Divehi script.  However English and Hindi are spoken and understood by the tour guides as a part of their duty.

Religion – There were Hindus, Christians and Muslims in Lakshadweep. Majority of the people in Lakshadweep are Muslims. The local population is Sunni Muslims belonging to the Shafi sect. The major communities that reside in Lakshadweep are Aminidivi, Koyas, Malmis and Malacheris. Amini community is renowned for their craft making skills. Malecheris are the main working community of Lakshadweep with the main profession of collecting nuts. Koyas are the land owners and Malmis work for them.

Best Season to visit Lakshadweep

Location of Lakshadweep

It is located about 400 km west of the coast of Kerala between 8 degrees and 12 degrees North latitude, and 71 degrees and 74 degrees East longitude. Among the islands Minicoy is the largest island of Lakshwadweep.

Each island in Lakshwadeep is covered with the snow white coral sands. The crystal clear water with the rich marine flora and fauna adds up to the beauty and charisma of the islands. Though smallest in area, Lakshadweep has an extensive lagoon area of about 4,200 Sq. Km. of territorial waters and about 4 Lakh Sq. Km. of economic zone. Out of 36 islands only 10 islands of Lakshwadweep are inhabited.

Climate of Lakshadweep

Climate of Lakshadweep is characterized as having tropical climate. In the months of September to March temperature varies between 27 and 32 degree Celsius. April and May are hottest months with an average temperature around 32°C. Winters during December to February have a temperature range of 20°C to 32°C.

Monsoons during June to August offer very heavy intermittent rainfalls. Strong blow of winds from the Sea is a common feature in Lakshadweep. During monsoons boats are not allowed to ply outside the lagoon because of rough sea. It is believed that presence of reef around island helps to maintain calm at lagoon.
