According to the initiative of popularizing Grand Kerala Shopping Festival (GKSF) in the domestic market, Kerala Tourism flagged off their national campaign from Delhi that would cover eight major cities in the country in the coming two weeks to conclude at Kannur in Kerala on December 15, where the official inaugural of the 48-day mega shopping fiesta is scheduled. It was flagged off by Vayalar Ravi, Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Government of India, and A P Anil Kumar, Minister for Welfare of Scheduled Castes & Backward Classes and Tourism, Government of Kerala, along with the prominent presence of Union Ministers and Members of Parliament from Kerala.

Kumar on the occasion said that annual GKSF is a prestigious event that is aims at popularizing tourism in Kerala beyond the boundaries of the state. Kumar added, “The objective is to reach out to more people and make the event popular.

Since GKSF is happening during the peak tourism season in Kerala, visitors can draw benefits of the shopping festival”. When it moves to the sixth edition, GKSF this year will set up a global village spread over 30 acres of land at Lulu Convention Centre at Bolgatty Island in Kochi. It will be open to the public for 15 days from December 22, 2012. Kumar informed, “Global Village is an additional feature this year. There will be country pavilions from abroad, and many states from India are expected to be there.” He added that countries like Thailand, Malaysia, China, and UAE have already confirmed participation. From India, states like Maharashtra, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka will set up pavilions in the Global Village.

GKSF organizers are expecting more confirmations of participation from countries in the South and South East Asia in the coming days. It is also the same, regarding the case of states, coming days will see the confirmation of many states on participation, said U V Jose, Director, GKSF and Additional Director ( Planning & Projects), Kerala Tourism. The current trend in Kerala on average spending in shopping is five per cent, and they aim to make it double through initiatives like GKSF. The festival intends in preparing and circulating a detailed directory of participating shopping establishments for tourists, he added. About the interests shown by various stakeholders like hotels, resort and restaurants, Jose said that a good number of restaurants, houseboats, and homestay establishments have registered this year. In the last edition about 5, 500 business establishments partook in the last edition of GKSF across Gold, Silver and General Categories. This year the organizers are expecting double the number.

The draft also talks about steps to strengthen the responsible tourism movement in the state and community development through tourism. This is part of the effort to ensure that tourism has a positive impact on a destination. All these efforts are in a bid to improve the quality of products and services offered by tour operators.

Tourism department of Kerala held a partnership meeting in New Delhi. This was the tenth partnership meet by them and they have entirely brought nearly 45 representatives, owners and tour operators from various places like resorts, medical tourism and hotels. Nearly 575 travel delegates attended this meeting from National Capital regions.

Mohanan S who is the joint director of Kerala tourism said that the domestic source markets were Maharashtra, West Bengal and Karnataka and the top international markets are UK, Germany and USA

The entire revenue earned by the Kerala tourism is INR 19,000 crore in 2011, which showed a surge of 11.5 percent in comparison to 2010.

This is part of a new drive by the state to approach the emerging markets with concrete short and long-term strategies and tap the potentials to the maximum,’ said Kerala Tourism Director Rani George. Kerala is already a known brand even in Australia, but after seeing the progress made by the state in the recent times, the industry appears keen on promoting Kerala further.

Australia is an emerging market for Kerala with 36,854 arrivals in 2010, making it the fifth biggest market.

The current strategy of the state tourism department, especially in the face of economic crisis in Europe and US, is to focus on the emerging markets like Australia and Scandinavia by pitching its unique tourism products.

More houseboat terminals, rest points, night-halt centres to provide a new experience of culture and shopping to tourists, and new routes for houseboats are proposed in the phase. The department had identified the places for night-halts of houseboats

Hundreds of houseboats taking tourists for a cruise ride now have no fixed place to anchor in the night and cannot offer any entertainment to the tourists in the evening as they are led to narrow canals in deserted locales as dusk falls. The master plan also seeks to address the safety concerns of the tourists.

The new facilities will be developed on a public-private partnership mode. The State will lay out necessary infrastructure while private players will create and run small vends to woo the visitors.

A study report had been prepared for infrastructure development in Kuttanad and surrounding  backwaters. Based on the study, a master plan will be prepared which can bring about a massive change in the  tourism sector in Kuttanad. It aims to develop a specific rural tourism product centered on Kuttanad making it a gateway of Alappuzha. The plan targets to provide infrastructure facilities for development of farm tourism in the region, formation of home stay clusters in the village to provide needed accommodation for tourists.

Kuttanad will be given more emphasis for infrastructure development in Kerala in the 12th Five Year Plan of the Union Tourism Ministry. The plan and estimate have been prepared and the project could be completed with an estimated cost of Rs 150 crore.  A portion of the fund will be provided by the Union Government and the rest will be met from other sources, including the fund of the Tourism Department.

The project will try to maximum conserve and preserve the nature and environment. All the above mentioned eco friendly practices will be adopted with the project so as to enhance the environment and tourist experience.

Kuttanad Tourism project will be one of its kind in the state and will become a role model for developing similar such projects in various destinations in the state.

The first tour will begin from Thiruvananthapuram and return after covering places such as Kovalam, Tiruvallam, Attukal, Padmanabhaswamy temple, Veli, and Neyyar dam.

Another group will begin from Kochi and cover the Ernakulathappan temple, Kaladi, Thripunithura, Athirampuzha, Guruvayur, and Kadampuzha. The tour will return to Kochi.

The third group will start from Angamali and cover Kanniyur, Bharananganam, Malayattur, Pala, and Valiyapalli. This group will conclude its journey in Kochi, said Mr. Anil Kumar, Kerala tourism Minister.

85 lakh domestic tourists visited the State in 2010 and the number of foreigners was seven lakh. To encourage pilgrim tourism, Kerala Government is giving shape to several projects.

The design based on Backawaters as central theme, and the pavilion is also a blend of Kerala’s pure art forms, calm beaches, hill stations, thick green forests, mouth watering cuisines and all. The stall was concieved and developed by Thiruvananthapuram based Stark Communications Pvt Ltd. They had also won the award for best international stand at FITUR, Madrid in January this year.

The World Travel Market is one of the most recognised and largest events in the Travel and Tourism field globally. The pavilion opened by Kerala Tourism emerged as a leading attraction of the event that kicked off on 7th November. A team led by State Tourism Minister A.P. Anil Kumar represented the state in the event. Kerala tourism is the only state destination to receive the best stand award and all the other winners have been national boards and international destinations.

After a gap of six years, the State Tourism Department recently led a delegation to Australia accompanied by Kerala Tourism Director Rani George,  Manoj Kumar, IAS, and representatives from the industry such as Cosmos Tours & Travels, Kairali Ayurvedic Health Resort, Kumarakom Lake Resort, Kerala Travel Center, and Uday Samudra Leisure Beach Hotel, among others.

The roadshows held on October 25 and 26 at Sydney and Melbourne saw Department officials make presentations on what made Kerala, a tourism Super-brand across the globe. They also included screening of the much-acclaimed ad film ‘Your Moment is Waiting,’. It also organised two workshops and facilitated business-to-business interactions with travel agents and tour operators. A ‘Go Kerala contest’ in collaboration with Silk Air and Singapore Airlines was held to generate brand awareness.

In Sydney, around 75 tour operators and travel agents took part while at Melbourne 60 had turned up. Many of them had evinced keen interest to visit Kerala and explore to take ahead possible business tie-ups. Australia is an emerging market for Kerala with 36, 854 arrivals in 2010, making it the fifth biggest market.

The tourism secretary T.K Manoj Kumar has his travel calendar full. He and tourism planning officer U V Jose are participating in the Scandinavian countries also. The department is holding workshops in Oslo, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Stockholm from November 14 to 17.

Anilkumar, Minister for Tourism, Kerala said that a state tourism policy was on the anvil aiming at attracting more tourists to Kerala and further improve the infrastructure under public-private partnership mode. The award is claimed to be an authoritative benchmark of consumer preferences in travel and tourism.

The system will be implemented within a month and a half. A new campaign on Kerala Waste-Free Destination will be launched with the active participation of local bodies, non-governmental organizations, and self-help groups. The mission of the policy is to provide a world-class yet local experience to tourists, attract investment, ensure benefits of tourism to local communities and value their contribution, and position Kerala as a visible global brand.

The indicators for the classification are identified and and each criteria has been awarded with a specific score. Of the total score of 1,000, about 200 is for sustainable management, 250 each for social cultural and economic responsibility, and 300 for economic responsibility. The tourism properties will have to achieve a minimum score in each area to qualify for the classification. Those with scores between 750 and 1,000; 600 and 749; and 500 and 599 will be classified into platinum, gold, and silver, respectively by the Tourism Ministry and department.

Kerala Tourism will organize training programmes regularly and the participants will be awarded a certificate giving them the title RT captains.

Customer satisfaction and environmental friendly steps are major criterion to adjudge a property. Policy against child abuse, equity in hiring women, promotion of local art and culture, and support to community development initiatives, included in the socio-cultural responsibility criterion. All efforts should contribute towards the economic benefit of the local community, including employment.

The Kerala tourism department and Kudumbasree have tied up to develop Vellar into a tourism village which in due course will evolve into an ethnic hangout. The village is expected to give a genuine Kerala shopping experience with its handicrafts stalls, ethnic food points and recreational facilities in the leisure zone. Due to its proximity to Kovalam, Vellar was chosen for the village.

The village, modeled on the lines of the Dilli Haat in New Delhi has been set up of  a cost of Rs.7 crore on a 15 acre abandoned quarry to promote ethnic and authentic products of the State. Kerala tourism has got the seven acre site from the Harbour Engineering Department. The natural features of the site, originally an abandoned quarry have been retained. A hillock, rising 15 meters from the ground, offers a fine view of the sea. The buildings are of the Kerala style.

The village has three sections – Travancore, Kochi and Malabar. The Travancore section, close to the reception , will have 14 stalls, a traditional house and a food court which will serve ethnic cuisine.

At the lowest level there will be stalls, curio shops selling local handicrafts.

A vast space has been left open near the reception and the car parking area for erecting makeshift stalls to organize craft fairs. The Kochi section has a covered theatre aimed at imparting training in making craft items. There will be a camping site where art exhibitions would be hosted.

The Kudumbasree units would have a permanent facility to market their products at the stalls in the village.

The village will have dedicated facilities for traditional artisans to work and finish their products.

A state of the art craft design technology  development centre, marketing office with modern facilities and training centre have also been set up.

Poovar region, Munnar, Thekkady, Bekal, Kovalam, Fort Kochi, Wayanad should be recognized as Special Economic Zones. The development of these places and their satellite destinations at STZs would encourage investment and will generate employment there. Apart from creating lamd banks for hotels, simplifying the rules for setting up tourism projects and providing single window clearance for projects, the government should take the lead in equipping these destinations with proper infrastructural facilities including accommodation and shopping and entertainment hubs, ensuring safety and security for tourists, maintenance of heritage structures and monuments, etc. All activities can be done in co-ordination with the private sector. STZ should be planned in a way that they blend with the socio cultural set up and sentiments of the local population which should be the beneficiary of such projects.

Though tourism has had industry status in Kerala since a long time, the concessions that it has been granted have not always been on par with that accorded to other industries like IT. It is time that the Government recognised Kerala tourism’s worthy contribution which could be further strengthened by developing STZs and tourism infrastructure in the state.

Saparya Pilot projects are coming up in Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Kannur and Kasaragod districts. They include the Bekel-Valiampara region in Kasaragod, Meenkunnu beach and Thalassery region in Kannur, Konni and Aranmula in Pathanamthitta and Kumarakom and Aymanam region in Kottayam. It is expected to give a fillip to the tourism sector in north Kerala.

Saparya  is a pioneering effort of Department of tourism for mapping and developing the tourism resources of a destination,for comprehensive development ,through participatory approach. The process involves and confirms participation of local communities,local government authorities Hospitality,Travel trade industry representatives of both public and private sectors etc in identification of existing and potential resources for tourism planning and development in a given region.

Tourism Resorts Kerala Ltd ( TRKL ), which is implementing the project,will launch pilot projects under the programme in Kannur,Kasaragode,Pathanamthitta and Kottayam districts. Kodanad Elephant training school

Malayattoor Church is situated on the other side of the Periyar and you can access this pilgrimage centre easily from Kodanad.

Kodanad is  the only elephant rescue and training centre in Kerala. Those elephants are trained here which are rescued from forest regions of Kerala.  Kerala Tourism visitors can see taming elephants and grooming sessions of baby elephants. You can witness the growing stages of a baby elephant.

Some elephants come out of the forest loosing their way ,some wounded are taken to the kraal for treatment. Baby elephants who have been washed down to the valley during mountain floods or whose mothers might have died are also taken to the Kodanad training camp.

The baby elephants are kept in a large cage which are made of teak wood.  These cages are called as Anakkottil in local language. The cage can accommodate six elephants at a time.

The little wildlife park near to the camp houses monkeys, peacocks, deers, snakes,wild cats and different types of birds.
