Session on future directions of FOSS held at Trivandrum and ICFOSS prepared roadmap for FOSS initiatives
Speakers at a consultation organised by the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software (ICFOSS) Trivandrum,Kerala highlighted the need to broaden FOSS initiatives. The consultation was organised as a part of celebrations of the 10th anniversary of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in India. FOSS initiatives should provide the technological means for establishing better collaboration amongst people thus to promote freedom in the society.
It is worth mentioning that Trivandrum is popularly called the FOSS capital of India. The session is being conducted in order to establish future directions for the use and promotion of free and open source software in the country. The consultation session is first of a series of similar sessions.
The session was opened by Satish Babu, Director, ICFOSS, who presented a brief history of FOSS in India along with its central philosophy, that of free access to knowledge.
A FOSS visioning expert committee was set up to help prepare the roadmap for ICFOSS. The committee comprises Rahul De of IIM-Bangalore, Sebastian Morris of IIM-Ahmedabad, Sunil Mani of Centre for Development Studies (CDS) and Soman Nair, Registrar of CDS.
The workshop was attended by representatives of different governmental , FOSS community groups and media, the student community, FOSS-based business enterprises, Technopark, and professional societies.
The speakers talked about their vision for the future of FOSS. Talking about their respective domains, they highlighted the gaps and limitations that need to be resolved as the next step of promoting FOSS. They also gave suggestions for the future journey of FOSS in the state. They said an enabling environment for FOSS-based enterprises would give a boost to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in information technology.
