Projects exploring tourism potential in the fishing sector were launched, all it needs is a big, brave push. Poyya Fish farm near Thirssur, the latest of many aqua tourism initiatives in the State, is waiting for that much-needed push to make it a premier aqua tourism destination.
A master plan has been formulated and submitted to the State Government to develop the model shrimp farm and training Centre at Poyya. The farm is situated near the Muziris Heritage site at Kottapuram of Kodungallur Taluk in Thrissur district.
As per the project, suggestions are forwarded to set up a fisheries museum, a demo of fish culture and pokkali farming. The museum will display age-old fishing methods, including fishing crafts and gears. Rearing of prawns, crabs, milkfish and pearlspot in the farm ponds have also been planned. It will implement various programmes for the promotion of aquaculture like demonstrating latest culture techniques to shrimp farmers, imparting training and harvest and marketing of shrimps. Giving due importance, ‘The Year of Karimeen’ (Karimeen Varsham) project at Poyya Fish Farm was inaugurated by Chief Minister Oommen Chandy last month here.
Fishing farms will provide tourists with the opportunity to experience fishing and the fish grown in the farm will be used to prepare traditional cuisine for tourists visiting the farm. This scientifically managed fish farm set in an idyllic spot is worth visiting.
