Poonjar Palace – proof of rich past and elegance
Poonjar Palace, s situated on the Pala-Erattupeta road in Kottayam, where one can witness the charm and elegance of yesteryear. It stands as a proof of the ambience of the rich past of this place. This 600 years old palace was the seat of the ancient Poonjar kingdom and the Rajas of this palace are connected to the Travancore royal family.
The walls of this temple are beautifully decorated with sculptures and carvings that depict scenes from the ancient Puranas. There is a museum within the palace and here there are many valuable antiques and furniture such as the palanquin, chandeliers, sculptures of dancing Shiva, rock cut lamps, droni which is a bed that is used for ayurvedic treatments, jewel boxes, etc. There is a conch which is well preserved that is taken out once in a year for performing some rituals.
Location and how to reach Poonjar Palace
Located beyond Erattupetta in the foothills of the Western Ghats, it is about 20 km from Pala. Tourists can get to Poonjar by bus, taxi or auto from Erattupetta and Pala. The nearest railway station is at Kottayam about 30 km from Pala. The Cochin airport is about 90 km away.
