Ponnittassery as Ecotourism Destination

Ponnittassery, a small agrarian Kerala village in Kanjikuzhy in Alappuzha district is all set to find a position on the ecotourism map of Kerala.

About 100 meters of land near the Alappuzha – Cherthala canal has been cleared for the purpose. There will be a small cafeteria and shops selling local produce and also facilities for pedal boating and facilities for angling. Tourist can enjoy the fresh catch cooked for them then and there. Only local dishes like tapioca and fish curry will be served at the eateries. There will also be stalls selling fresh organically grown vegetables.

The Kanjikkuzhy grama panchayat and the Ponnittassery Agricultural Library put forward the idea of the ecotourism project about three years ago. The Ponnittassery Agricultural Library, with a rare collection by a group of farmers in the village too would become part of the eco-tourism project.

“The advantage of the location is that it is close to many resorts at Marari Beach. So Ponnittassery will become the centre of activity for these resorts”, said the DTPC Secretary. The proximity of the village to the Vembanad Lake and Arabian Sea are also perceived as advantages.

The Alappuzha DTPC plans to beautify the AS canal as part of the project and lure tourists by launching pedal boat services in the canal.

The project is expected to enhance employment opportunities for the villagers and self-help groups like Kudumbasree will play an active role in its implementation.
