Peechi Dam, Thrissur – beautiful weekend Kerala tour spot

The beautiful picnic spot, Peechi dam is located in Peechi village, 23 km away from Thrissur, Kerala.  The Peechi dam was constructed across the Manali River to irrigate the vast paddy fields in the area and provide drinking water to Thrissur town. This irrigation dam is now part of a wildlife sanctuary and a popular tourist destination.

Hordes of tourists opt for the weekend tours from Thrissur to enjoy the natural environment.

The well maintained botanical gardens with their splendid fountains add to the attraction of the area. The orchid collection attracts many tourists. This beautiful picnic spot offers facilities for boating on the lake. Wild elephants from the forests areas come down to the water side. Sometimes they can be seen during the boat ride.  It is indeed a lifetime experience to go for a boating spree in the river and exploring the surrounding locale.

With more than 50 species of orchids and medicinal plants, the sanctuary is a veritable treasure trove of rare flora and fauna.

The Peechi-Vazhani Sanctuary has dense, moist deciduous and semi-evergreen forests is located in the catchment area of the Peechi and Vazhani dam.

Trekking in the areas close to the dam site is safe but the deep forests have many wild animals like elephants, tigers, leopards and wild dogs. There are also different varieties of deer. The park maintains an information center for the benefit of tourists.

About 20 km from Thrissur, Peechi is well connected to the town by busses via NH 47. The nearest railway station at Thrissur is well connected to all major cities. The nearest airport at Cochin is about 90 km from Peechi
