Pathanamthitta

Pathanamthitta is a combination of two words pathanam and thitta, which means an array of houses on the river side. This district was formed on first November 1982 in the interest of hastening process of development. Bordered by Western Ghats, this district offers a visual treat to your eyes with its picturesque landscape. It’s the district with evergreen forests, rivers, hills and plains. This land is adorned with fertile agricultural land, plantations and forests. Pathanamthitta situated in the central travancore region in Kerala. The total area of the district is 2642 sq.kms, of this, 1390.73 sq.kms come under forests. Forests cover more than fifty percent of this district.

Pathanamthitta  can be called as Pilgrim hub of Kerala as the world famous pilgrim centre Sabarimala is situated here. The main trunk road to Sabarimala is from Pathanamthitta. This district is home for a number of famous South Asian religious spots. Pathanamthitta is a fast-developing city and business center. After Indian Independence, the town became part of Kerala and made as 12th district of Kerala. The youngest district in the state of Kerala nestles its head on the slopes of western ghats and stretches to the low-lying rice fields bordering Alappuzha district. Paddy, tapioca, and a variety of vegetables and spices like cardamom, pepper etc are cultivated. This district is also famous for its rich rubber plantations. Pathanamthitta is the major source of revenue to government exchequer.

Hindus, Christians and Muslims live harmoniously here. Muslims of Pathanamthitta are Thulukkar Who are Tamil Muslims.  Presence of several missionary schools and colleges, helped the locals to gain better higher education, which boosted a large number to migrate to US and western countries. The town thus is known as NRI (Non-Resident Indians) hub of Kerala.
