Padma Awards 2011 – Honour for Kerala and Malayalees
Padma Awards, highest civilian awards, are given for exceptional and outstanding service in any field including service rendered by Government servants. There are three categories to Padma awards, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree. The awards are announced on the occasion of Republic Day every year. Malayalees figured out in Padma Awards 2011 announcement and it is indeed a gratified moment for Kerala.
Famous Malayalam lyricist and poet ONV Kurup, has been chosen for Padma Vibhushan. Earlier he was conferred with Padma Shri in 1988 and the Jnanpith Award in 2007.
Infosys CEO Kris Gopalakrishnan, Ayurvedic scholar & Physician late K Raghavan Thirumulpad and Kathakali artist Madavoor Vasudevan Nair, are the recipients for Padma Bhushan.
Trivandrum has the opportunity to be proud because it has two Padma Shri winners - G Shankar, architect and founder of Habitat Technology Group, and Dr. Marthanda Pillai, Neurosurgeon, Ananthapuri Hospitals & Research Institute.
Noted Filmmaker Shaji N Karun, Actor Jayaram, Mohiniyattam dancer Kalamandalam Kshemavathy, United Arab Emirates based renowned physician turned entrepreneur Dr. Azad Moopen, Dr. Jose Chacko Periappuram, Cardio-thoracic surgeon, who performed the first successful human-to-human heart-transplant in Kerala and Peruvanam Kuttan Marar, known for his ‘chenda melam’ (drum concert) are honoured with Padma Shree awards.
