No chartered flights from Europe to Kerala in 2012 due to global recession
Giving a boost to the tourism industry in Kerala, attempts were made to bring chartered flights from Denmark, Portugal and Norway. In the light of global recession, there are no chartered flights from Europe to Kerala in 2012 as tourists were not able to spent for the chartered flights.
When the tourist sector suffers badly, the foreign tourists arriving by the chartered flights will be a big boost to the burgeoning tourism industry, especially Ayurveda, as it is in great demand among foreign tourists. Thomas Cook, First Choice, Oriental Routes and Le Passage to India are the leading companies operating chartered flights to Kerala.
The commencement of charter flights from European countries would have become as a relief to the tourism industry that is trying hard to overcome the slump due to economic recession and non-operation of chartered flights from the U.K. and Scandinavian countries to Kerala. It would have catered to the needs of the tourism industry as well as business and medical travel requiring quick transit.
The global recession has had an adverse affect on the tourism sector last year. This affected the inflow of foreign tourists but domestic tourist flow had been influenced by domestic issues. While many hotels and resorts in Kovalam saw less-than-usual or no bookings ahead during the season.
The Mullaperiyar dam issue has lead to drop in tourists from Tamil Nadu to Kerala, especially the popular destinations- Munnar and Thekkady. Hoteliers here have witnessed a huge dip in occupancies by almost 50 per cent as tourists are canceling their bookings in panic.
