Muthoot Hotels is now Raxa Collective - Uniquely Eco-friendly
The first resort in the country to introduce a butterfly park and organic farming, the Muthoot Cardamom County at Thekkady is indeed a resort with a difference. The guides at the resort are only too happy to take the guests around the sprawling campus to show them the variety of eco-friendly initiatives introduced by the resort.
“We grow an array of vegetables, both local and ‘English’, like carrot, beans, beetroot, cabbage, broccoli, red/green spinach, radish, tomatoes, varieties of bananas and tapioca along with many fruits, flowers and spices like cardamom, pepper, all spice, ginger, nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon,” said Mr. K.E Varghese, Chief Operations Manager of Muthoot Cardamom County. The butterfly garden adds value to this organic farm. “As many as 10 to 20 varieties of butterflies can be seen in our butterfly garden. Apart from butterfly breeding, we have honey bee farming too.”
Mr. Varghese said that the Cardamom County is the only resort in the state to have won all three ISO certifications: ISO 9001 for Quality Management, ISO 4001 for Environmental Protection, ISO 22000 for Food safety Management. Apart from this, Cardamom County’s Ayura, the Ayurvedic Centre, has the prestigious GreenLeaf certification.
As part of responsible tourism, the resort tribal arts and culture and showcase them before the guests. “As part of our eco-friendly activities we recycle 8,000 litres of waste water for gardening purposes. We also make paper carry bags and envelopes from wastes of food materials and recycle used linen of making curtains etc. We have facilities for water harvesting, solar water heating, water recycling, sewage treatment, etc. to name a few.”
How far has the Thekkady boat tragedy affected this resort, we asked? “Yes, we also bore the brunt of the boat tragedy. But we have slowly recovered from it. We are active members of the Thekkady District Tourism Promotion Council (TDPC) and we give prime importance to the Responsible Tourism activities initiated by the Government. Each of the eleven major resorts here has contributed ten life jackets to the TDPC. It is the small scale hotels and businesses like home-stays which had been affected the most.”
According to Mr. Varghese, apart from enhancing safety measures to avoid such major tragedies in future, an increase in the entry fee before boating also would be a big help. At present, the fee is Rs.300 for foreign tourists and Rs.25 only for domestic tourists. If the fee is raised at least to Rs.100, the number of visitors can be restricted, he said. Another development that has come in the wake of the boat tragedy is the importance of satellite destinations like Chellarkovil, Ramakkalmedu, where one can see wind mills, Grambi, Gavi, etc.
“As part of our responsible tourism activities, we have employed 20 women, all of whom from part of ‘Vasanthasena’, to take part in our eco-friendly activities,” said Assistant Resort Manager Mr. Salim E.I.
A four star resort located on a gently sloping hill, the architecture and landscaping of the entire resort has been thoughtfully created in keeping with the eternal beauty of its natural surroundings. A peculiar feature of the construction is that, instead of colour washing the exterior of the buildings, only creepers are used. The interiors of the resort have been aesthetically designed and furnished in an appealing blend of contemporary styling and natural charm.
Each of the well-equipped cozy cottages has spacious bedrooms and a private verandah overlooking the scenic natural beauty of the resort. Luxury suites with all modern amenities are also available.
A multicuisine restaurant, appropriately named ‘All Spices,’ provides a variety of gastronomic delights. The expansive open air terrace is the ideal venue for informal parties, grills and barbeques. Adjudged as having one of the best breakfasts in the world, Cardamom County also offers various traditional delicacies like sadhya, appam and stew, kappa and meen curry, etc.
Ayura, an exclusive Ayurveda Spa offers a wide array of wellness and therapeutic treatments. Other facilities offered by the resort include: Health Club, Gym; Swimming Pool, Library, Yoga Room, Souvenir Store, etc.
