Situated 1520 meter above sea level, the hill station of Munnar in Idduki district of Kerala, lies at the confluence of three mountain streams – Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala. Munnar was once the summer resort of the erstwhile British Government. Today, the place has emerged as one of South India’s most popular hill stations. Foreign tourists visit the place during the end of the year, but the summer months of April-june are the favourite time for domestic tourists, especially those from South India. The tourist inflow into Munnar has begun to have a positive effect on the satellite destination like Adimali, Anachal, Chittirapuram and Kallar. The satellite towns offer varied accommodation options like home stays, lodges and small resorts.
Beautiful tea plantation carpeting the slopes, Munnar is a unique experience with its wide range of trekking and holiday facilities. Among the exotic flora found in the forest and grasslands here is the Neelakuriniji, a flower which blooms once in twelve years. Munnar also has the highest peak in South India- Anamudi-which towers to a height of over 2695 metres is an ideal spot for campers and trekkers.
Munnar is also famous for its tea estates. There are about 30 tea plantations in and around Munnar. Located 2km from Munnar on the Nallathany Road is the Tata Tea Museum. One can watch demonstrations of tea production, tea processing and tea tasting here.
Located 7km from Munnar is Devikulam Lake. It is an ideal spot to unwind and relax. One can also enjoy fishing here. Mattupetty, 14km away from Munnar is another major tourist attraction. It is famous for its specialized diary farmand Indo-Swiss livestock project. Over 100 varieties of high yielding cattle are reared here. The Mattupetty Lake and dam, just a short distance from the farm, is a very beautiful picnic spot. The sprawling Kundala tea plantations and the Kundala Lake are other attractions in the vicinity. DTPC Idukki provides boating facilities on the Mattupetty Dam.
Rajamalai (Eravikulam National Park) is situated 13km away from Munnar. The natural habitat of the Niligiri Tahr (mountain goat), Rajamala is 2,695 metres above sea level. Half the world’s population of the Nilgiri Tahr which is fast extinct is found here.
Top Station, 40 km from Munnar is another attraction. Located 1700 metres above sea level, this is the highest point on the Munnar-Kodaikanal road. Top Station also offers a panoramic view of neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. Other famous for its sandalwood forest, Blossom International Park which has an adventure track, roller skating, underground meditation centre and a beautiful garden, Pallivasal (8km from Munnar), the site of the first hydroelectric project in Kerala, Nyayamakad (10 km from Munnar), a land of breath taking waterfalls, an excellent picnic spot and trekking point, and Lock Heart Gap (13 km from Munnar), an ideal place for adventure tourism and trekking.
Pothanmedu (6km from Munnar), an ideal place for trekking offers an excellent view of tea, coffee and cardamom plantations. Attukad (9km from Munnar),a panorama of waterfalls and rolling hills is located between Munnar and Pallivasal. Chithirapuram (10km from Munnar) is the home of Pallivasal hydroelectric project and is also famous for its picturesque tea plantation. Mount Cramel Church, established in 1898, is the first Roman Catholic church in the High Ranges. Anayirankal (22km from Munnar ) is an ideal picnic spot. The Anayirankaldam is surrounded by the tea plantations and evergreen forests. The sandal wood factory of the Forest Department, the ancient caves with mural relics from the Neolithic age and Valara waterfalls, Meenuli, noted for the two acres of evergreen forests upon a huge rock is an ideal trekking spot, Thommankuthu, famous for its seven step waterfall, offers adventure tourism. Keezharkuth is famous for the Rainbow Waterfall.

Local transportation in and around Munnar is easily available. There are several buses run by the state transport corporation that offer a guided tour of places in and around Munnar. The excellent road network links the hill resort of Munnar with other important places in Kerala.
