Mayapott Plantation Bungalow – a mystical place
Mayapott Bungalow is for those travelers who prefer an authentic local experience rather than staying in a Kerala hotel. A short distance away from Thekkady, Kerala up winding hills, nestled among the rolling plantations of 100 acres of cardamom, lies this Plantation Bungalow. It is situated at Vallakdavu, Kattapana and bird lovers could find their time valuable in this nature where very rare species have their habitat in the plantations.
The estate owned by George J Mathew and Sons presently managed by Jojo George is one of the finest among cardamom plantations on the hills. Mayapott is built around a huge rock, which was used as a resting point for hunters. The house located in the “chekuthanmala” (devils rock) valley from where one can view greenery around. There is a stream that flows under the bridge that connects the two portions of the house, which is quite an overwhelming sight during the rains. The area also houses the huge pond that has been used as a storage tank for irrigating the plantation. No wonder the place is called Mayapott meaning ‘the mystical point’ in Tamil language.
Bungalow offers, two fully furnished bedrooms and one villa suite room, a two bed private spa, dining area on a covered bridge, common fire-place and a reading room. All the rooms have view of the plantation and the mesmerizing stream
Bungalow serves continental and South Indian homely food using the traditional recipe of the region. Barbeque can be done on request. For those of you interested in expanding your culinary skills, a special cooking demonstration by family members can be arranged.
Activities in Mayapott:
- Plantation tour.
- Visit to Periyar wildlife sanctuary.
- Trek to ‘Chekuthanmala’ (Not recommended in Monsoon).
- Bird Watching
Season:
- May – September: Light treks and plantation tours can be done. However the ‘chekuthanmala’ trek is not recommended.
- October – February: Soon after the monsoons. Crop season for cardamom and Plantation are lush with activity. All treks can be done.
- December- February: Can be quite chilly. Good time for barbecues.
- March – April: Mornings are hot. However the forest canopy and the stone structure of Mayapott keeps the house cool and pleasant. Good time to relax indoors and for those seeking adventures outdoors!
- Every moment of your stay in Plantation Bungalow will be steeped in nostalgia. And as you board your coach back to the city, waving goodbye to your hosts, you will feel as though you are leaving home.
