Mampara in Nelliyampathy, Palakkad – Bhramaram shooting location

Ever Since, I have seen the Malayalam film Bhramaram, longed to visit  Mampara, amazing and adventurous spot where film was shot. Mampara peak is situated near to Nelliyampathy in Palakkad, Kerala. Nelliyampathy is 52 kms away from  Palakkad.

To reach Mampara, you have to journey your way through treacherous terrain in a four-wheel vehicle for two hours.  From the town of Nenmara in Palakkad district, to reach Nelliyampathy, one has to take the road starting from Nenmara that proceeds to the Pothundy Dam.

We stopped our vehicle at Pothundy Dam which is made up with an unusual mixture of jaggery and quick lime, and  the second dam in Asia constructed without using cement mixture. Song  scenes of  Dileep Film Vinodayatra directed by Sathyan Anthikad has been picturised in the dam premises.  The dam is at the foot of the Nelliampathy hill. We have taken the cloud hanging below the peak. It was fabulous…

Continued our journey to the vantage point Mampara. While driving towards Nelliyampathy, there are about 10 hairpin bends, which itself has plenty of interesting sights to offer. Nelliyampathy is known as Poor man’s  Ooty. Steep ways through farms and tea estates lead to Nelliyampathy, making it ideal for a drive. Reached here by afternoon and had a lunch from a small hotel . We couldn’t find a  petrol pump or ATM at Nelliyampathy. Mampara is 14 kms away from Nelliampathy.

Jeeps, the only vehicle that can conquer the hills are parked at the top of the Mampara view point. There are more than seventy jeeps that take services regularly in the sixteen-kilo metre long hillside pathways. The shuddering journey almost takes two hours to complete. The jeep can rock-climb the shaky pathways, leading to the Manmpara View Point at Nelliyampathy in Palakkad. They charged Rs.600/- for the jeep travel to & fro.

Steep ways through farms and tea estates lead to Mempara, making it ideal as an adventurous spot. On the way, the jeep driver told us sometime we can catch a glimpse. We had a close look at the privately managed farms and also vast expanses of tea estates managed by different plantation companies.

We have never, ever seen roads like this in our life, which says a lot.  Sometimes our vehicle shaken, the bumps were painful, sometimes we almost fell, and most of the time we were miserable. Our emptyish faces were a proof of the fear that caught us. Now, clouds seemed to be rolling in from all four corners of the sky. Sometimes we can see only grasslands and big rocks, no road is seen.

At last we reached Mampara Peak.  A look from the Mampara may lead your eyes over the far-stretching fields and pastures of the Palakkad District.  As you reach the peak, you will discover that the clouds literally envelop the whole place, giving you the ethereal feeling of walking on them. From Mampara view point the towns of Pollachi and Valparai can be spotted. This trip is something which can rejuvenate you to an altogether new level.

The thrill and ecstasy of this adventurous trip should never touch you until you experience it.

Lovely post. I would like to know if there is a place called mattumala somewhere here in Nelliyampathy? Or is it the name of the same location, Mampara, you have talked about?
