Local Language and Religion of Lakshadweep
Local Language – For the major part of Lakshadweep, the language spoken is Malayalam. Minicoy is however an exception where the spoken language is Mahal which is written in Divehi script. However English and Hindi are spoken and understood by the tour guides as a part of their duty.
Religion – There were Hindus, Christians and Muslims in Lakshadweep. Majority of the people in Lakshadweep are Muslims. The local population is Sunni Muslims belonging to the Shafi sect. The major communities that reside in Lakshadweep are Aminidivi, Koyas, Malmis and Malacheris. Amini community is renowned for their craft making skills. Malecheris are the main working community of Lakshadweep with the main profession of collecting nuts. Koyas are the land owners and Malmis work for them.
