Licensing and classification for house boats and spas in Kerala

Strict licensing and classification for house boat, spas, homestays and ayurvedic resorts in Kerala will be considered by Government as a part of policy action. This will further ensure quality services are offered to the visitors to Kerala. This decision has been taken since medical tourism has been booming in Kerala state.

Although few of the norms are already in place for the licensing and also classification of the houseboats and homestays, but unscrupulous elements trying to make easy money by deceiving tourists. The houseboat industry in Alleppey had an uncontrolled growth in the initial phase with no standards and regulations. As backwater tourism developed as a result of the increase in the number of tourists to Kerala, norms were stipulated by the government for the safety and comfort of the tourists.

Kerala is already a key medical destination for people from developing nations. But the biggest impediment Kerala faces, however is, illegal and unregulated mushrooming of spas and resorts. Is it any wonder that the growing number of illegal spas outnumber the genuine ones. So Kerala Government has realized that something needs to be done before illegal spas take over the industry all together, so as to protect the brand image of God’s own country.
