Kunchan Nambiar Smarakom

Kalakkath Kunchan Nambiar represents an age and its culture in the field of Malayalam literature.He was born at Kalakkath Tharavad in Killikurisimangalam of Palakkad district in the beginning of the 18th century.

In 1976, the Government headded by C Achutha Menon took over the Kunchan Nambiar’s house and turned it into a memorial. Now the Kunchan Smarakom is a national monument and is being governed by a committee appointed by the government. The 300 year old nalukettu,with earthen walls is a great attraction for the discerning visitors. The Nalukettu has five small rooms,in addition to the Thekkini and Vadakkini portions,kitchen and dining hall.

Innovative satiric art form Thullal was introduced in the 18th century by Kunchan Nambiar and it reflected his deep sense of social responsibility. He was a satirist, who brought literary wit and humour within the ken of common man.

Every year May 5,the birthday of the poet is obeserved as Kunjan day or Kunjan Dhinam. Kaviyarangu Symposium, Aksharaslokam, Ottanthullal and various programmes are conducted on this day. The festival of “Navaratri” is celebrated with much grandeur here.

Kunchan Smarakom conducts performances in Thullal and Mohiniyattom . It has its own Thullal troupe. The troupe has done various performances extensively in several states.

Kunchan Smaraka Kalapeetam, set up under Kerala Kalamandalam functions as an autonomous  institution. It conducts 3 year degree courses in Thullal, Mohiniyattom,Kaikottikali,Mridhangam and Carnatic music. The Smarakom is giving training in different forms of  Thullal – Ottan,Seethankan and Parayan. The memorial has a library and an auditorium. A four year course in Ottanthullal, is also conducted here with the help of artists attached to this national monument.

The Smarakom is 9km away from Lakkidi railwaystation and 55 km away from nearest Airport Coimbatore.
