Kodungallur – historical nerve centre of Kerala

Kodungallur, a busy city in the district of Thrissur, is renowned for its port and the temple dedicated to Goddess Bhagawati. It is located about 30 km from Ernakulam. The ancient seaport Muziris at the mouth of the Periyar River used to be very close to Kodungallar. Kodungallur was the capital of the Kulasekhara dynasty, called Mahodayapuram or Shinkli.

Kodungalloor has great tradition and culture, and being a historical nerve centre of Kerala, it has an unique identity of its own and some say that it should not be made a satellite town of Kochi city.

It was established trade link in the Indian sea trading. It had regular trade links with Syria, Asia Minor, Egypt and many other Middle East countries during the pre-historic periods.

It is believed that Thomas the Apostle of Jesus had landed in Cranganore (present Kodungallur) in AD 52 to spread Christianity in India. The first Christian church in India was built in this place. The first Muslim religious place in India, the Cheraman Juma Masjid was also built in Kodungallur in 629 AD.

Kodungallur is a destination for tourists looking to enjoy natures beauty, dig into its historical importance and bow down at its several religious sites. The city engulfed by the Arabian Sea and Periyar River is a perfect place for nature lovers to be.

Cheraman Juma Masjid at Kodungallur is situated at a distance of 2 km from Kodungalloor town. This mosque bears a resemblance to Hindu temples as it was constructed using traditional architectural styles of the Hindus. Cheraman Juma Masjid is the first mosque in India where Juma prayers began.

Kodungallur is famous for the temple, which is dedicated to Goddess Bhagawati. It has been believed that this temple was originally a Shiva temple. The most important festival of the city is Kodungallur Bharani which draws millions of devotees here. .

Mar Thoma church – First Church in INDIA . The apostle St Thomas landed in Kodungallur in 52 AD. He established the church. It still houses ancient relics.

Thiruvanchikulam Maha Deva Siva temple – is one of the oldest Siva temples in south India where Lord Siva is said to have lived along with his whole family. This temple has got a relation with south India’s famous Chidambaram temple.

Azhikode – River Periyar combine with Arabian Sea here. Apostle.St.Mar Thoma landed here for the propagation of Christianity in India.
