Keralam – Museum of History and Heritage showcases 3000 year old history of Kerala

Keralam – Museum of  History and Heritage has been formulated on the lines of interactive museum, and set up in Park View Building at Thiruvananthapuram was once an official residence of the high-profile Travancore chief secretary. This history-cum-heritage museum with a rare collection of exhibits that throw light into Kerala’s history and culture over the centuries.

“Keralam” is a collaborative effort of the departments of tourism and culture. The Park View building has transformed into a modern, high-tech museum spreading over 7,000 sqft will preserve the fascinating 3000-year-old history of Kerala in words, visuals, and videos for the future generation.

The Museum showcases  “ Kerala through ages “, which houses a rich array of sculptures, idols and tools in stone, metal and wood, ancient frescoes, murals and different art forms.

The main purpose of this Kerala museum is to chart Kerala’s historical and cultural evolution over the centuries. From pre historic to historic times, Kerala’s progress in various fields during different periods is showcased in the museum’s nine galleries. Pre historic to present is what the museum showcases in the galleries.

Five types of interaction are possible in each gallery. The vivid description on the gallery board is the first interactive piece which give a brief outline on what one can visually experience. The sojourn becomes more fruitful as one has unrestricted freedom to move around, and seek help from the kiosk to explore the subject more profoundly. Thirdly the object display is offers eye level descriptions about certailn periods and ages.

Fourth is the LCD display of the exact place from which the excavation is done. Lastly, individual interactions with the guide will give a total run down on the subject.

A walk through the museum takes one to ages unknown, and depictions so vivid that one will be glued to each gallery. Truly its Kerala through ages, starting from Paleolithic, Mesolithic to Neolithic and the gallery collections.

The early historic period depicts a treasure of coins which portrays a vivid picture of Kerala’s trade links.

The architecture of Kerala is another section which has a real Nalukettu complete with a kitchen and the utensils used during the period. Differently shaped Temple lamps, variety of musical instruments used for  folklore and folk music create curiosity.

Entrance fee :  Indians – Adults Rs.20, Children Rs.10
Foreigners  -  Adults Rs.200, Children Rs.50
