Kerala State came into being in November 1st 1956. Kerala is divided into 14 revenue districts or administrative divisions. District Collector is the executive head of district administration and also responsible for the maintenance of the law and order of the district. Each of the districts has a District Court. Superintendent of Police, heads the District Police organization of Kerala Police in each district.
Kerala districts are generally grouped into North Kerala, South Kerala and Central Kerala districts.
South Kerala
Thiruvananthapuram – is the state capital and southern most district in Kerala. It is the second most populous district in Kerala. It was earlier known as Trivandrum
Pathanamthitta – is an agricultural district cultivating rubber and tea the most. Sabarimala, f amous pilgrimage centre is situated here
Kottayam – It is the first district in India to achieve 100% literacy. Kottayam significantly contributes to the overall rubber production in India.
Kollam – is the capital of cashew trading and processing industry of Kerala.Thenmala, 66km east of Kollam, is the first eco tourism project in India. First Coastal Police Station in Kerala was established in Kollam. It was earlier known ad Quilon.
Alappuzha – This low lying district is known for its Coir Industries.It is earlier known as Alleppey and headquarters of Kerala backwater tourism.
North Kerala
Kannur – It is known for its handloom industries and associated with ritual art form Theyyam. It was earlier known as Cannanore
Kasargod – It is the northern most district of Kerala. Kasargod is bound in the north and east by the state of Karnataka. Kerala has endowed with 44 rivers out of which 11 rivers flows in Kasargod.
Kozhikode – It was earlier known as Calicut . Kappad Beach is the place here where Vascodagama reached first time in India.
Mallapuram – Is the Muslim majority district and also the most populous region in Kerala .Wood related industries like saw mills, furniture manufactures and timber sales are widly seen business in Malappuram district. It is famous for the Mamamkam festival which is a grand festival celebrated only once in twelve years.
Wayanad – The district is known as Green Paradise due to the presence of dense forests and foliage. Many cash crops like Coffee,tea,pepper and vanilla cultivates here in abundance. The most important crop in the district is rice.
Central Kerala
Ernakulam - Ernakulam District is the highest revenue yielding and most advanced district in the state. It has strategic buildings like Ship yard,Naval Base to its glory
Idukki – Idukki has the largest arch dam in India, constructed for the Idukki Hydro Electric Power Project which powers almost half of the entire Kerala.Its main attractions are the wildlife sanctuaries and hill stations.
Palakkad: It was earlier known as Palghat.Famous Malampuzha Dam situates here in Palakkad district. Palakkad is is very much influenced by the Tamil language and culture. It is one of the hottest places in Kerala.
Thrissur - It is earlier known as Trichur and famous for Thrissur Pooram. Thrissur is the cultural hub of Kerala. It houses Kerala Kalamandalam, Kerala Sahitya Academy, Kerala Lalitakala Academy and Kerala Sangeeta Nataka Academy.
Hindus, Christians and Muslims live harmoniously in Kerala. You can see a small population of Jains, Jews and Sikhs are also residing in Kerala.
Kerala has three airports in the state which provide international and domestic connections. Kannur is set to have a new international airport, the fourth in Kerala.
