KIMS – Pioneering new-age health care

Kerala Institute of Medical Science (KIMS), the health tourism award winner for maximum foreign exchange earnings, aims to offer health care with a difference. This 450 bed multi specialty tertiary care hospital located in Trivandrum, is the first venture of KIMS Health Care Management Limited. By this time KIMS has become renowned brand in health care in India and in the GCC countries. It offers high quality and cost effective health care and is fast developing into a world-class centre of health care, learning and research.

In 2006 , it had successfully completed both National Accreditation Board for Hospitals(NABH)and Australian  Council on Healthcare Standards International (ACHSI) accreditation to become the first hospital in India with both National and International accreditations. KIMS has been re accredited by NABH in the year 2010.  In the year 2004, KIMS forayed into the Gulf market by opening KIMS Bahrain Medical Centre in Manama, Bahrain. Apart from Bahrain, KIMS currently has its GCC presence in Oman Qatar, Dammam and Jubail in Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In an interview given to Kerala Holidays 247,  Dr.M.I Sahadulla, the Chairman and managing Director of the Hospital explains the strengths of the Institution in the health care sector.

Could you tell us about the unique features of the hospital?

There are over 40 specialties backed by comprehensive and best technology and well-trained para-medical staff. It has a hi-end cardic catheterization laboratory, eight state-of-the-art operation theatres, advanced facilities for conducting open heart surgeries, cardiac by pass, valve replacement surgery and correction of congenital cardiac malformations, a multi disciplinary intensive care unit, NABL accredited laboratory services with state-of the art technology, blood bank with facility for component  separation, 64 slice CT scan and 1.5Tesla MRI Scan System, round the clock emergency laboratory, diagnostic and pharmacy services and full fledged Ayurveda services offering rejuvenation therapy, massage and slimming programme.

What are the latest additions to improve the existing facilities?

KIMS has always been in the forefront in adopting new advances in medicine and technology. Some of the most recent development here include medical oncology unit and 20 bedded state of the art emergency medical services. The facility includes one of the largest emergency rooms, specially trained trauma team., 64 slice CT, MRI and OT attached, and free hi-tech ambulance within city limits for all emergencies. A department of Perinatology with high risk pregnancy and a medicine unit having IU22 fetal scan facility is added 64 slice CT scan and EECP and Nuclear Medicine are other latest additions.

What are the immediate expansion plans of the Hospital?

KIMS , is established a state-of-the art cancer care facility, KIMS Pinnacle Comprehensive Cancer Centre (KPCCC0’ in association with one of the famous cancer center in USA. The KPCCC, scheduled for launch in September 2010 shall facilities almost all areas of cancer care. It assist in cancer prevention , earlycancer detection, medical aocology, radition oncology, surgical oncology, gynaec oncology, paediatric oncology, breast cancer, cancer education and research.

As a part of its expansion plans in the country KIMS has already slated concepts and projects that are in various initial or planning stages in major cities of Kerala. KIMS Cochin, the 100 bedded hospital project is scheduled to be inaugurated in the mouth of January 2011. The Group has dedicated hospital planning and health care management consulting services unit which assists in conceptualizing implementing, commissioning and managing the various projects.

How will you define the motto of the Hospital?

The Group envisages growing beyond the boundaries of geography and time, bringing together people, culture, nationalities and dreams, with the promise of delivering quality healthcare with touch of compassion and courtesy.

What are the awards and recognitions won by KIMS?

It has fetched many awards like Avaya Global Connect Customer Responsiveness Award 2010, South Asian Federation of Accountants (SAFA) award for best presented accounts and corporate governance disclosure, A-stable rating by CRISIL for the best financial reporting in the year 2008, Hospital Management Asia (HMA) Award for the project Musculo Skeletal Injuries in 2009, AV Gandhi Memorial Award 2007 and 2008for excellence in Cardiology, Award for transparency in financial reporting in the year 2005 and 2008, Best Power User Award by Cyber India Online for optimal power utilisatin in the health care industry in India  in 2004, Kerala State Pollution Control Board Award for biochemical waste management in 2004 and 2006, Health Tourism Award 2005 for maximum foreign exchange earnings, Best Customer site Award from HCL Infosystems Ltd and Regional ACLS Training Centre by American Heart Association, etc.
