Kerala Ayurveda – offers highly effective treatments

Kerala is the hub of Ayurveda in India and is the pioneer in propagating and preserving authentic Ayurveda. Kerala Ayurveda is rampantly popular and many treatment procedures originated here.

Ayurveda was developed in Kerala as a family profession by mainly eight families ( eight physicians) who were well versed in Vagbata’s Ashtanga Hridaya. Vagbata, who was one of the greatest proponents of Ayurveda, spent considerable time in Kerala to spread the knowledge of Ayurveda. Each of the Ashtavaidya families in Kerala specialised in one of the eight branches of Ayurveda and handed over their knowledge through generations. Books and treatises were authored by Kerala’s expert physicians also indicate Kerala’s involvement in the development of Ayurveda

Further, Ayurveda became well known for rejuvenation programmes, beauty care and body care therapies, etc. Ayurvedic therapies and treatments that are unique to Kerala include Njavarakizhi, Pizhichil, Uzhichil, Kizhi, Elakizhi, Choornakizhi, Dhara etc. These have proved highly effective in providing relief for various illnesses and disorders.

Kerala’s martial art (Kalaripayattu) experts use an advanced form of massage called Marma Chikilsa to enhance physical flexibility. The physicians of Kerala are specialised in Vishachikilsa or Toxicology, vital for the treatment of snakebites. Medicines for the fever, epilepsy, Gajachikilsa (treatment for the elephants) are some of the other important contributions into the field of Ayurveda

The tropical environment of Kerala also led to the invention of many Ayurvedic cures. Kerala’s climate and presence of all medical plants and the cool monsoon are very suitable for ayurveda treatments. It is not just for the affected parts, but treats the whole body. The high humidity of State climate helps to open all pores of the body, while applying massage oil it is easy to absorbe oil and get quick result.

The state also has the ideal environment to train in meditation and Yoga which have proved to be the best ways to gain physical power and mental peace.
