Kaviyoor

Kaviyoor
Kaviyoor is referred in history as one of the 64 Brahmin settlements of Kerala established by Vishnu incarnate Parashuram. It is located on the Manimala river bank in Thiruvalla Taluk in Pathanamthitta district. Kaviyoor, earlier known as Kapiyoor is famous for its temples.

The Kaviyoor Mahadeva temple is said to be one of the oldest of the Mahadeva temples in Kerala, constructed in the early years of the 10th century. References are there regarding the gifts that were offered to this temple by the Kaviyoor Shasanas of 950 A.D. The Darusilpas seen around the temple belong to the 17th century. Tekekudi Cave Temple in Kaviyoor is one of the rare cave temples of Kerala. This eighth century temple, built in rock has beautiful Pallava style of architecture. There is also a Sivalinga inside the cave, which is about three feet in height.  An idol of Hanuman is also seen inside the temple.

The village was once well known  for a bronze product – called ‘’kindi”, a spouted pot used in olden days. The manufacturing process, was kept confidential to one family.  It is  said to be the making was  more complex than that of ‘Aranmula Kannaadi’. The last person who was knowing the secret of the making had died around 1890, without imparting the knowledge to the next generation. No one has preserved the records of manufacturing process, thus the Kaviyoor kindi disappeared forever.
