Festivals and Art forms of Lakshadweep
Festivals and Art forms of Lakshadweep are greatly influenced by Muslim culture. Kolkali, Parichakali and Lava are some of the major dances of Lakshadweep. Opana which is a famous dance from Kerala is also seen here during the marriage celebrations of Muslims. The best place to witness these festivals is the mosques that are scattered almost all parts of the island.
Id-Ul-Fitr: It is one of the most celebrated festival of Lakshadweep. It is celebrated when the new moon appears after following the one month long fasting in Ramadan.
Bakrid: It is considered as the day when pious journey of Muslim Pilgrims to Mecca comes to an end. On this day a tradition of sacrificing the goat is followed. The meat is later distributed among the pilgrims in the mosque.
Milad-Ul-Nabi: The day commemorates the birthday of Prophet Mohammad. It is also known as Mawlid. Sweets are distributed and large number of people participated in it.
Muharram: This festival celebrates the martyrdom of Hazrat Imam Hussein. He was the grandson of Prophet Mohammad who used to live in Iraq.
