The Department of Tourism, Kerala is on the ambitious mission of creating a comprehensive database of all tourist accommodation units in Kerala. The Department released the provisional Report of the Database Survey at a function attended by DTPC officials and researchers and held at the Government Guest House, Thycaud, Trivandrum.
Mr.M.Sivasankar, Director, Kerala Tourism released the provisional report entitled ‘Database Survey of Kerala Tourist Accommodation units in Kerala’ which was handed over to him by Mr. M.R Balakrishnan, Director of Economics and Statistics, Kerala. Also released on the occasion was the booklet ‘Kerala Tourism Statistics’. Mr. K.N. Satheesh, Kerala Tourism was also present on the occasion.
“I am confident that survey data will give a new orientation to tourism planning for introducing new IT related projects. This initiative is also prelude to a major drive to digitalizing this industry which will provide yet another competitive edge to the tourism industry in the State”‘ said Mr. Sivasankar.
The Department of Economic and Statistic conducted a comprehensive survey of 3842 identified properties to compile the database. The information collected pertains to a wide range of items and will be available on the Kerala tourism website shortly.
The aim of the database survey project which is being successfully carried out by Kerala Tourism with the close coordination of the Department of Economics and Statistics and IT@school Project, Department of Education is to provide updated information to tourists as well as industry stakeholders about the tourism infrastructure in the State. It also seeks to bring all the major players in the industry into the ICT framework so as to improve the efficiency of the services offered.
On registration, properties will be given a username and password so that they can view the information pertaining to their establishment and edit it if necessary. There will also be provision for online registration.
The Kerala Tourism website already has provision for online reservation for those properties that have opted for the facility. The mandatory C Form with information on the foreigners who register as hotel guests is also online.
“The plan is to make monthly tourism statistic compilation an online process. It is presently undertaken manually”, sources told Kerala Holidays 247. At present, 40% of the identified properties in Kerala are IT enabled. A data entry sheet will be made available for those that are not so that information for updating the database can be handed in before the tenth day of each month.
