Dolls museum of Kerala

A wonderful doll museum has opened in Kerala’s capital city of Thiruvananthapuram. With an area of more than 5,000 sq ft, the newly museum is one of the biggest of its kind in the country, with more than 2500 dolls from various parts of the world adorning its shelves.

The Museum is located at the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare head quarters in Thycaud.  Originally set up in 1981 under the name Chacha Nehru Children’s Museum (after the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, (who is known for his love for children), the museum got its new look as part of the Silver Jubilee celebrations of the State Council for Child Welfare. The dolls, victimized by the ravages of time, were renovated at a cost around Rs. 13.5 lakh. The new museum was designed by Mr. Najeem K Sultan.

The dolls in different shapes, sizes, costumes and expressions-right from one-inch to six feet-tall ones- include those made in China clay, papier Mache, cloth, coir, wood, rubber, plastic and fibers are simply astonishing. There are dolls decked in traditional Kerala attire with glittering jewellery and in the typical costumes of other states too.  A major attraction is the set of dolls dressed to depict India’s culture and heritage. In bridal attire, as dancers and instrumentalists, farmers and tribals- the list of the dolls is endless. All the six rooms which house the dolls are beautifully decorated.

The Museum also has a good display of stamp and masks. A mini aquarium and the first issue of a volume of children’s literature in Malayalam are also exhibited here. The arrangement of the gallery, the display and the light and sound system transport make the experience here really unique.

Ms P.K Sreemathy, Minister for Health inaugurated the renovated  nursery and child care facilities of the Council were also inaugurated along with the doll museum. The 8,100 sq mt facility includes a nursery, crèche, play room, kitchen, dining room, bathrooms, staff area and an intensive care unit for sick children. Mr.C.Jayan Babu, Mayor, Thiruvananthapuram, also launched the new website of the Kerala State Council for Child Welfare at the function. Mr.V.Sivankutty, MLA inaugurated the renovated children’s park.
