Customs and Manners of Lakshadweep People

Rice is the staple food of the people of Lakshadweep as of Kerala. People of this union territory are also very good in jewelry making. They make beautiful pieces from conglomeration of corals, shells and oysters. Clothing in Lakshadweep is integrally related to its warm climate. Cotton cloth is worn throughout the year.

Many customs related to child birth and marriage in Lakshadweep are unique. As soon as a child is born his near relatives are informed. The child is named either on the same day or on the third, seventh or the fourteenth day. The custom related to child birth is a little different in Minicoy. Even before the child birth, the father sends a small bed and a dress for the baby. The child birth is followed by the distribution of the beaten rice and coconuts.

As far as marriage is concerned, inter caste marriage is not permissible sometimes. The husband is bound to pay an annual payment the upkeep of his wife which is one of the important marriage settlement clauses. Unlike many societies, a divorce in Lakshadweep is not considered a social stigma. On marriage a man goes to his wife’s house and takes his wife’s family name. Polygamy is practised in all islands except Minicoy and divorce is granted without much difficulty in uncongenial alliances. A wife can demand divorce on grounds of non-payment of customary due. Adultery provide a ground for divorce.
