Cochin Corporation – administrates city of Kochi

Cochin Corporation is the Second largest city corporation in Kerala by area and population. It is the Municipal Corporation headquartered at Ernakulam that administrates the city of Kochi. The city corporation is spread over 94.88 km2 with 74 administrative  wards . The Corporation of Cochin was formed on November 1, 1967 merging municipalities of Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Ernakulam.

The Cochin city corporation is ruled by the council of 74 members, headed by the Mayor. The current Kochi Mayor is Tony Chamminy. The law and order of the city is handled by the City Police Commissioner.

For the purpose of administration, the corporation is divided into different departments, each catering city’s development and welfare. The Personal Department takes care of the general administration of the city. The various departments include that of Town Planning, Health, Engineering, Revenue, Accounts and the Council Section. The corporation has a Janaseva Kendram that addresses the issues of the public. The corporation also run eight maternity and child welfare centers in the city under it.

The flag of Kochi Corporation is parted by a left diagonal with white forming the upper part symbolizing the city and blue forming lower part symbolizing the seas.

Today, Kochi is the commercial hub of Kerala, and one of the fastest growing cities in India.

Kochi, is now in the limelight as one of the most actively emerging cities in India. A host of development projects are likely to transform Kochi into a key centre of development in South India and few of them are mentioned below

Vallarpadam International Container Terminal is the flagship project of Kochi and proposed LNG terminal will be a shot in the arm to development of Kerala and for industries in South India.

Indicating a new era in the IT development of Kerala, Dubai Internet City is setting up a smart city at Kakkanad near Kochi which will show case almost all the major IT companies of the world.

The Kochi metro rail project is another key initiative aimed at improving the mass transportation system in Kochi and the process is at an advanced stage now.
