Christmas Celebrations in Kerala – Magical Festive Mood in December
Christmas is a popular festival of the Christians celebrated throughout the world. However, the zeal and enthusiasm of Christmas celebrations remain the same everywhere. Christians celebrate Christmas Day on December 25th as the anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ.
Popular customs include exchanging gifts, decorating Christmas trees, attending church, sharing meals with family and friends and, of course, waiting for Santa Claus to arrive. All the surrounding is decorated with balloons, fully decorated Christmas tree and many small and large starts.
Christmas is incomplete without X’mas stars and it gives magical and mesmerizing look to the Christmas tree. One can have different type of star according to budget and need. The crib is a miniature production of the stable where Jesus was born. In memory of this, decorated Pulkoodu ( crib) exhibits in homes and churches.
Kerala celebrates Christmas in a grand manner and the spirit of Christmas is evident, one can easily sense the festive mood among the masses. Here come the month of December and X’mas stars start appearing all over in houses, offices and everywhere.
Carols and songs are sung in the churches and Priests hold the Holy Mass at midnight. Hymns are sung and crackers are burst to signify the coming of Jesus Christ into the world.
Later in the day, there is a feast with delicacies. Cakes are made at homes along with sweets making Christmas look like a traditional Kerala festival. Meat forms part of the feast even in rural homes where meat is rarely eaten.
In Kerala, Xmas retains its homeliness and expresses itself in the cultural forms of the country without losing what is native to itself.
