Unique exhibition on photographs of Pachyderms

An  exceptional art gallery at Eenchackal, Thiruvananthapuram showcases a grand collection of rare and fascinating photographs of Pachyderms. Baby elephants, wild elephants and caparisoned elephants- all caught in various situations- some funny, some violent, caught on camera by an ace photographer, Mr.B Chandrakumar. Sot in an effort spanning 12 years, this photo exhibition can be considered the world’s first permanent and exclusive photo exhibition on elephants by an individual. It reveals the science and psychology of elephants. It is poetry on elephants written by the ‘lens’ and is extremely informative for researchers and students interested  in pachyderm. (more…)

Arakkal Museum

The museum is in the palace of the Ali Rajas of Arakkal royal family and is the one and only Muslim dynasty of Kerala who have a history dating back to 12th century AD. The queens of Arakkal are addressed as ‘Beevis’ . The palace is called Arakkal Kettu and is considered to be 200 years old. Arakkal Kettu consists of palace, pandippura (the entrance), administrative block, residential houses, mosques, Panndikasalas(the store house for trading)and all construction is in late rite and wood with tiled roofs. A huge bell of bronze weighing almost 80kg,from Arabia can be seen on the bell tower near the main gate. Two old mosques, artistically constructed are situated nearby and are worth visiting. A traditional oil lamp is kept lit in one of the bungalows and is called Kedavilakku. The palace complex is now under the department of Archeology. (more…)

Elephant Art Museum

Established in 1996 by Elephant Welfare Association,  Elephant Art museum is exclusively dedicated for elephants. The museum depicts rare photos of elephants, variety of materials used for elephants, showcasing the biological features, ritualistic importance etc. The museum is dedicated to Dr.Prabhakaran. Folklore Museum

The folklore museum exhibits antiques, traditional household and commercial articles, measuring instruments, agriculture implements etc. of Kerala. The main feature of this museum is a Theyyam Gallery, where costumes, ornaments, headgears, weapons and photographs of various Theyyam (a ritualistic performing folk art of North Malabar) characters are displayed. Live size figures of some Theyyam characters are also displayed here. The Padayani gallery displays the costumes, face masks and weapons of patayani, a popular ritual folk art performed in the Bhadrakali temples in Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts. The museum functions in a 90 year old traditional Nalukettu, a typical traditional Kerala household owned by the Chiralkkal Royal family. Facing the Nalukettu is a large man made pond-chira,with an area of about 14 acres, which is a wonder in its own. (more…)

Guruvayur Museum

Guruvayur museum mainly showcases various crafts and holy objects that are dedicated by devotees of Lord Sri Guruvayurappan. Guruvayur is a temple town in Thrissur district famous worldwide for the temple of Lord Srikrishna. The devotees address the Lord as Sri Guruvayurappan. Guruvayur museum is managed by the Guruvayur temple management. A rare collection of ancient wood carvings from nearby temples are on display here. Ambalavayal Heritage Museum, Wayanad

This archaeological museum in Wayanad, known as the Ambalavayal Heritage Museum is one museum in Kerala having a very large collection of rare artifacts dating back to the 2nd century A.D. The exhibits here are evidences pointing to an advanced civilization that had existed in the mountains of Wayanad. The articles on display are always a fascination for any historian. Krishna Menon Museum

Krishna Menon Museum started in 1975, the art gallery has an excellent collection of original paintings by Raja Ravi Varma and Raja Raja Varma. A total of 66 paintings are exhibited here which include contemporary paintings and replica of traditional murals from Kerala, Ajantha and Somappalli, Chinese, Japanese, Rajasthan, Mughal and Bangali  paintings are also displayed here.

The Krishna Menon Museum started in 1976 is an excellent tribute to the late. V K Krishna Menon, renowned statesman of  free India. His personal belongings and souvenirs are at display. (more…)

Kunhali Marikkar Memorial Museum

Iringal is the birth place of Kunhali Marikkar, the valiant admiral of the Zamorins, who commanded the fleet which had routed the Portuguese in many aspic sea battles. He had built a fort on the southern bank of Moorad River, presently called Kottakkal. (more…)

Mural Art, Thrissur

The one-time summer palace of the Raja of Kollengode now houses the mural art museum. Murals from various temples and palaces were redrawn in canvas by talented artists are displayed here. Kollangode house which originally belonged to Vasudeva Raja, the king of erstwhile Kollangode, who had constructed this in 1904 and gifted it to his daughter. In 1975, the Department of Archeology, Govt of Kerala acquired the property and converted it into a museum. Some personal belongings of Vasudeva Raja are also displayed here. (more…)

Museum of Ethnology, Kozhikode

Museum of  Ethnology  Kerala institute for Research, Training and Development Studies of scheduled castes and tribes was started in 1972. The ethnological museum here houses a large collection of artifacts, costumes, jewelers, household articles, nets and traps, wood carvings, agriculture tools, musical instruments and ceremonial paraphernalia of all the tribal communities in Kerala. An attraction of this museum is that there is a collection of live size figures of different tribes along with their huts and other implements connected with their life. These include different communities from pure hunters to agriculture settlers. The library here has a good collection of book on Anthropology and Sociology. (more…)

Museum of Zoology, Kozhikode

The museum functions in the new building of Western Ghat Field Research Station of the Zoological Survey of India, in Kozhikode and was opened very recently. A major portion of the first floor of the museum is dedicated to the rich biological wealth of the Western Ghats, which is one of the 34 biodiversity hot spots in the world. Pazhassi Raja Museum, Wayanad

A new museum is coming up at Mananthavady in Wayanad district dedicated to Pazhassi Raja, the Lion of Kerala, who organized guerilla warfare against the British East Company. The Museum features the history of Pazhassi Raja as well as the archeological and cultural aspects of the region.  Almost all the work has been completed and will be opened to the public in the near future. The museum is inside the compound of Pazhassi Tomb, the final resting place of Pazhassi Raja.

Puravasthu Museum, Malappuram

It’s the personal collection of antiques and artifacts by Kappekkadan Beerankutty, who lives at Ponmala, in Malappuram district. His small home is showcased with these articles, but he has kept it open for students and well wishers. (more…)

Teak Museum, Nilambur

Teak museum situated at Nilambur, the first of its kind in the world.  The teak museum is exclusively devoted to display of scientific information and related exhibits on various aspects of teak. Detailed information on root system, flower, seed, germination methods, pests, diseases, physiological disorders etc is exhibited. A special attraction in the display is the collection of over 300 butterflies, moths and insects connected with teak plantations. Animals and plants associated with teak are also displayed here. Thunjan Parambu Museum

The museum is a part of Thunjan Parambu in Tirur, Malappuram Dt. Thujan Parambu is the birth place of Thunjuath Ezhuthachan, known as the Father of Malayalam literature. Vallathol Museum

The museum is dedicated to Late. Vallathole Narayana Menon, the great Malayalam poet and literary figure who founded Kerala Kalamandalam in 1930. Kerala Kalamandalam, which imparts training in and conducts performances of classical arts of Kerala, have recently attained the status of a Deemed University for Art and Culture. The Museum function from Vallathol’s old Kalamandalam campus (Nila campus).The Museum showcases the poetic works, cultural contributions and achievements of Mahakavi Vallathol over a period of time. The main -building in the old campus is occupied by the portrait-Gallery. Here portraits of the great artists of yore in oil painting adorn the fourwalls. Most of them had played commendable roles in the formative years of Kalamandalam. In the Gallery they have exhibited countless mementos and honors that Kalamandalam has received for Kathakali, Koodiyattam and Mohiniyattam recitals held in the international dance, drama and music festivals all over the world. The museum is located at Cheruthuruthy, 34km from Thrissur town towards north, on Shoranur highway. Shoranur  jn. railway-station is only 1km away from Vallathole Museum. Zamorin’s Museum

It’s a newly established museum under the management of Zamorins Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode. Efforts are on to collect artifacts for this museum from royal families and other institutions. An area of 1000sqft has been dedicated for this museum. The focus is on the Zamorin Dynasty who had ruled Kozhikode for several centuries, till the invasion of the British.  A good collection of photographs of various rulers, temples, rituals and ceremonies are exhibited here. Swords, shields, arrows, old coins, oil lamps and some other artifacts are displayed here. The museum is located adjacent to the Higher Secondary School in Tali Shiva Temple in Kozhikode. The ancient temple of Lord Shiva and the adjacent temple pond are worth seeing. (more…)

Science and Technology Museum

The Kerala State Science and Technology Museum, is situated in Thiruvananthapuram. It is  such place one has to visit.  Established in 1984, the Kerala State Science & Technology Museum, is an autonomous organization, setup by the Government of Kerala, to serve as a dynamic medium of science communication for the public and for inculcating a sense of inquiry and scientific temperament in the minds of the young. Parikshith Thampuran Museum is an interesting place in the midst of hustle and bustle of city, is situated adjacent to Siva Temple at the Durbar Hall. Hill Palace, Tripunithura, Kochi

Hill Palace, Tripunithura, Kochi

Hill Palace, Tripunithura was the administrative seat and residence of Kochi royal family, was being built  in 1865 by Kochi Maharaja. As the palace was being constructed on a hillock, it is known as Hill Palace. This 19th century building is situated on Ernakulam- Chottanikkara route, so close to Tripunithura at a distance of  2 kms and is 12 kms away from Ernakulam. It spans over 54 acres and consists 49 buildings. Single storied  ‘Ettukettu’ with an adjacent pond, temple and kulappura, was constructed in typical Kerala architecture is the oldest structure here. The roof of the palace is perfectly done by Mangalore tiles which gives great protection from heavy downpour, longevity and asthetic appearance. The other buildings are a combination of traditional and western architecture. (more…)
