Kochi Muziris Biennale

By all accounts, the Kochi Muziris Biennale, which commenced on 12/12/12 and will conclude on 13/03/13, is a roaring success.

Visitors, a lot of them young and curious, are queuing up eagerly to engage with a wealth and volume of art that has probably never been showcased in one place in India at the same time. A Rs. 50 ticket gets you single-entry access to five ticketed venues (entry to the rest of the venues is free) as well as a nifty map to help you locate the venues and the artworks within. There are volunteers everywhere, eager to assist and share historic lore (as well as gossip).

The Biennale is a melting pot of local and international talent and the art expresses itself in many ways. Apart from canvas, there’s video, even sound. Visitors are encouraged to peer and prod (occasionally) and even climb into attics. Apart from the main exhibits, of which there are a lot, there are a bunch of collaterals (art from the BRICS nations, for instance), arresting wall murals, talks, and so on. Art apart, what’s cheering is the revival of several old buildings—the grand Aspinwall House, the charming Pepper House and the artily grungy former warehouse now christened ‘Moidu’s Heritage’. It’s interesting to see how the artworks engage with their settings, these not being conventional galleries in any sense. Centrestage at Moidu’s and not-to-be-missed is the loud yet lulling ‘Desert of Pharan/Adam’, Ahmed Mater’s stunning large scale images and videos of Makkah and the Haj pilgrimage.

The art, eclectic as it is, is bound to catalyse debates, discussions and critiques. Is it good or bad? That’s hard to say. There’s just a lot of it, and that’s a good thing. See kochimuzirisbiennale.org.

The threat an estuary often faces in Kasargod

Kasargod district is gifted with the most number of rivers and estuaries in the State. But these fragile natural eco-systems and resources are shrinking due to uncontrolled sand mining and extensive use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers for agricultural purposes.

Untreated water waste from industries and plastic wastes are also deteriorating the rivers and estuaries, which are natural filters of eco systems.

The biodiversity and ecological significance of rivers and estuarine wetlands in Kasargod coast lure the shorebirds from thousands of miles away.

Finally estuaries are considered as the prime habitat of migratory water birds and these eco-systems of biodiversity and ecological significance must be conserved for the welfare of the host community and avian fauna.

A visit to these estuaries is an enthralling experience, especially for environmentally conscious people and bird enthusiasts.

Tourism-cum-passenger boat services to be launched soon in Kochi

To promote tourism and inprove the passenger boat service in the city, the Kerala State Water Transport Department (KSWTD) will soon introduce tourist-cum-passenger boat services. Though the water transport department mooted the proposal last year, the project was delayed for several reasons.

“Shortage of staff is a major hurdle in the way of starting the service in Ernakulam. However, we are planning to go ahead and introduce it as the service which were launched earlier in the Alappuzha  Kollam route and other routes in Alappuzha district on an experimental basis were found to be a great success” Said Shaji V Nair, director, KSWTD.

As per the proposal, the new boat services are expected to connect the islands of  Vypeen, Fort Kochi, Mulavukad, Mattancherry and willingdon Island. The intention is to give tourists a feel of backwaters of Kochi.

The duration of a trip will be two-and-a half hours. There will be eight trips per day, with four boats pressed into service.

The new services are expected to solve the water transport problems of the city. Currently, lack of vessels and adequate services to the nearby islands are the major problems as both tourists and passengers have to depend on the scant available boat services.

“The final date for launching the new boat service is yet to be fixed. The feasibility report has been submitted,” said Joseph Xavier, KSWTD superintendent, Ernakulam.  The upper deck of the boat which has more facilities will be reserved for tourists. The fare will be higher for the tourists.

Mamta Mohandas Speaks about Kerala

Kannur has something for everyone

As I belong to the Malabar side of Kerala, I’d pick Kannur aka Cannanore as my favourite. Kannur also happens to be the place where my dad grew up and quite coincidentally my first movie was also shot there. Kannur is a place with history, beaches, forts, temples and beautiful art forms. It has an old fort called St. Angelo and one of the oldest lighthouses which is still in use. Payyaambalam is a gorgeous drive-in beach with a long coastline. I like watching Thaiyyam, a traditional and religious art form, where a person dances chanting prayers. I also love the Marari beach and resort there. I visited Periyar Wildlife Reserve recently with friends. The experience was amazing, and we got some mind blowing pictures of tigers, leopards, pythons and cobras.

KERALA With Jaishree Misra

A Deer Chase In Periyar

As a malayali married to a UP-wallah, it is my bounden duty on a regular basis to accompany North indian friends and relatives down to Kerala so they can enjoy the verdant beauty of my state. Most people come for the beaches and sleepy backwater cruises but, when a cousin decided to come with his two teenaged daughters, we decided—after the obligatory jaunts to Varkala, Kovalam and Kanyakumari—that the girls might like something more adventurous. With a few days to spare, we hired a jeep and drove through idukki district’s lush green hills and tea plantations to the wildlife reserve of Thekkady in search of wild elephants and those all-too-elusive tigers.
