The Kurinjimala Sanctuary is about 32 sq. km. in area and is located in Devikulam, which is in Idukki district. The sanctuary is named after a very famous blue flower in Kerala, Neelakurinji. This flower is found abundantly in Idukki district and Munnar region. Kurinjimala literally means mountain where Kurinji flowers are found. The forest department organizes a Neelakurinji fest every year in the month of October.
The Sanctuary is the natural habitat of the endangered plant Neelakurinji. It was declared as a sanctuary in 2006. The objective is to retain the unique biodiversity of this area.

Eravikulam National Park is situated 15 km from Munnar. The Eravikulam National Park’s main attraction is the Nilgiri Tahr and the spectacular Neelakurinji flower (Strobilanthes kunthianus) that blooms once in 12 years. South India’s highest peak, Anamudi situated at a height of 2695 m is located in the southern region of the park.

Idukki Wildlife Sanctuary is located 55 km from Thodupuzha in Idukki district. A charming canopy of dense tropical evergreen forests, tropical semi-evergreen forests and moist deciduous forests covers the scenic lake that surrounds this sanctuary on three sides.

Neyyar Sanctuary is 30 km from Thiruvananthapuram. With 12,000 hectares of natural vegetation spread across an undulating terrain, the sanctuary is interspersed with rushing brooks, flat meadows and gentle slopes.The sanctuary offers a haven for exotic flora and fauna. The 1868 m Agasthyamala Peak as its highest point is an ideal trekking destination.

Parambikulam Wildlife Sanctuary situated 110 km from Palakkad stretches over 285 sq. kms. It is home to a variety of rare wild animals. The Parambikulam Reservoir offers facilities for Boating/cruising.

Peechi Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary was established in 1958 and it is one of the oldest wildlife reserves in Kerala. Formed around the twin reservoirs of Peechi and Vazhani, this sanctuary has a rich repository of bio-diversity. Several endangered herbs, shrubs, rare medicinal plants and innumerable variety of orchids grow profusely in this sanctuary.

Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary nestled in the Western Ghats about 50 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary is dotted with hillocks, forests and eucalyptus plantations. This verdurous sanctuary offers a rich collection of flora and fauna.

Located in the Periyar Valley 4 km from Thekkady and nestled in the Western Ghats, this is one of the world’s richest bio-diversity spots. This fascinating natural wildlife sanctuary became the protected Periyar Tiger Reserve, an initiative to protect the animal. There are two watchtowers inside the forest teeming with exotic wildlife.

Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary is 66 km from Kollam. Declared a wildlife sanctuary in 1984, the Shenduruney Wildlife Sanctuary region is an important ecotourism resource of Thenmala. The region is unique for its bio-diversity and remains of Stone Age culture.

Silent Valley National Park is located 40 km northwest of Mannarkad in Palakkad district, the name owes its origin to the absence of the chirping of cicadas. The 89.52 sq. km Silent Valley National Park is believed to be the sole surviving bit of evergreen forests in the Sahya Ranges.

Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary is 17 km east of Sulthan Bathery. Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, which established in 1973 encompasses an area of 344.33 sq. kilometers and is made up of two discontinuous pockets – Muthanga 18 km west of Sulthan Bathery in the south and Tholpetty which lies 15 km from Mananthavady in the north.

Parambikulam wild sanctuary in Annapadi, Palakkad district, Kerala was declared a Tiger Reserve Mr Jairam Ramesh, Union Minister of State for Environment and Forest who made the declaration said that this is the 38th tiger reserve in the country. The Total area of the Tiger Reserve is 643.66 sq km with a buffer zone of 225.3sq km. The Parambikulam Wild life Sanctuary with total area of 285 sq km has been expanded by adjacent forest areas from Nemara, Vazhachal and Chalakudy Forest Divisions.

Chimmini Wildlife Sanctuary is situated 37 km from Thrissur district. The Forest Department here organizes trekking and bamboo rafting trips. But the main highlight is the ‘Moonlight Sonata’, which involves rafting on full moon nights.

Neyyar dam is situated in the Agasthyamalai hills in the Neyyattinkara Taluk of Thiruvananthapuram district. It was established in 1958. There is the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary surrounding the dam which has all kinds of wild animals like Tigers, Wild boars, Elephants, Wild buffaloes, Porcupines and different types of snakes. There is lake at the bottom of the Western Ghats which is very popular with visitors. Peppara Dam and Peppara Wildlife Sanctuary nestled in the Western Ghats is situated near the Ponmudi Hills and is 50 kms from Thiruvananthapuram.
